History of Women and Gender at the University of Kansas
The Department of History values the study of gender, including the study of women, sexuality, and masculinity. Faculty in the gender field infuse their courses with gendered analysis and encourage graduate students to do the same.
Applicants to the graduate program should apply to work directly with one of the faculty members below.
In partnership with the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, History graduate students can earn a certification (that will appear on their transcripts) in the gender field. A Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies may be particularly appealing to students seeking academic employment in interdisciplinary women’s studies programs, perhaps in addition to a main appointment in their home discipline. It would also be useful for those who currently work with or hope to work with women’s organizations or in supervisory capacities in business or government. Note that History Department students, in consultation with their History advisor, must make a formal application to the WGSS program in order to acquire the certificate. Detailed information about the application process appears here: http://wgss.ku.edu/graduate/
To complete a Minor Field (6 hours) or Major Field (18-24 hours) in Gender, graduate students must complete coursework, including:
- HIST 895: Colloquium on the History of Gender (3 hours)
- WGSS 801: Women and Gender Studies: Theory and Methods (3 hours)
- WGSS 898: Research Colloquium (3 hours)
- electives taught by faculty listed at the end of this document
